The Warrior Healer
Soft Fur for Hard Times: A Sheltie Serves Her Country
“I’d like to pet her,” the young soldier said quietly. His father, keeping vigil by his son’s hospital bed, winced slightly. The hand that reached out was missing several fingers; those that remained were held in place by dark stitches and several large metal pins. “Would that be ok?” “Sure,” I replied, holding my Shetland Sheepdog Layla closer. “She’d love it. Layla doesn’t care how many fingers you have as long as the ones you have are petting her.” (Read more...)
A Warrior of the Heart
When a Sheltie chooses their “person” they will stick with them through thick and thin. Some of them see no reason to acknowledge the presence of anyone else except to warn them to keep away. So you can understand that I was surprised when one day my Sheltie, Casey, joyfully ran to an elderly couple he did not know. He danced around them and cuddled up to them for attention, ignoring me when I called him back to me.
After that incident I began watching him carefully around other people. Casey didn't care for strangers in their 20's, 30's, or 40's - and he even ran away from children. But let someone with gray hair walk by and Casey ran to greet them enthusiastically. This was not typical Sheltie behavior! It made me think that perhaps Casey was intended to accomplish something greater with his life. And maybe I would help him. (Read more...)
The Way of the Warrior
Cory is my second Sheltie. It took me a long time to discover his talent because I didn't know about the sport of dog agility. Together we learned to run a course of jumps, tunnels, climbing to great heights and balancing on obstacles. Watching Cory run the obstacles is like watching a child on a playground. Eager to tackle each obstacle, Cory flies on the field. He is hindered only by my attempts to keep up and point out which obstacle to take next. This is the heart and spirit of the warrior. Cory knows how to conquer. He faces the battle with confidence and determination. Should he slip or stumble, he is undaunted. He regains his footing and charges on without looking back.
How many of us stumble in our daily lives at some task, great or small? How many of us can carry on in spite of it? How many of us stumble once again because we are looking back at what tripped us up, instead of looking ahead? (Read more...)

The Reluctant Warrior (UPDATE! Don't miss the slide show of Duncan's best photos at the bottom of Duncan's page.)
It was a windy autumn day when we brought our new Sheltie puppy home. We expected him to be like all our other puppies - curious and full of enthusiasm and joy. So when I sat this puppy down in our yard I expected him to run about with glee. Instead, a gust of wind toppled him over onto his side. He scrambled to his tiny paws and ran over to me. He sat down and shook at my feet, afraid to move away. This was the beginning of a brand new experience for me. I had never before had a timid puppy and had no clue as to what to do for him. But or 10 year old Sheltie, Cory, knew. And he would be the one to show us how to care for our new puppy. (Read more...)
A State of Grace (UPDATE! Don't miss the video at the bottom of the Gracie's page! Guaranteed to make you go "Awwww..."
Among the many definitions of “Grace” you will find: Divine love and protection. An excellence or power granted by God. The freely given, unmerited favor and love of God. The influence or spirit of God operating to regenerate or strengthen. Also called State of Grace. The condition of being in God’s favor.
We didn’t name our new puppy Gracie because of any of the above definitions.
We gave her this name because she was born the day before Thanksgiving – a day of saying thanks, or “Grace.” Also, as we were “trying on” our favorite names for her, this was the one name that seemed to “stick.” It didn’t take long to discover that her name would be prophetic. (Read more...)
Duncan, the Dark Knight
In a world where danger lurks in every shadow;
At a time when the future looks bleak and many hearts despair;
There comes a dark figure, walking the streets with a keen alertness to every sound and movement, ready to stand against evil with a fierce sense of justice and a belief in the prevailing power of right against wrong –
it’s Duncan, the Dark Knight! (Read more...)
The Warrior King
We don't know when it hapened - or even how it happened. Casey was King. That was it. no dispute. Casey got the pillow he wanted, the toy he wanted, and played when he wanted. he even cussed us out if his dinner was late! (I don't know where he learned to suxx - but if you heard him you would know that he could!) If you looked into Casey's eyes would see an equal looking back at you. There was even the distinct feeling that Casey felt that he was superior to you. (Read more...)
Heroes
Throughout history our companion animals have done much more than ease our burdens and guard our property. They have guarded our lives without hesitation or concern for their own wellbeing. Whether it be an intruder, a house fire, or an uninvited squirrel, our furry "guardian angels" have sounded the alarm or thrown themselves into harms way time and time again. Sometimes we hear about these heroic efforts on the news - sometimes we do not. What we seldom hear about are the times that pet owners have faced down danger to come to the rescue of their beloved animals. I'd like to tell you about two such instances: one that happened to our neighbors and one that happened to the mother of a friend. (Read more...)
Laughter is the Best Medicine
A client brought a litter of puppies to the veterinary clinic for inoculations and worming. As the look-alike pups squirmed over and under one another in their box, the vet realized it would be difficult to tell the treated ones from the rest. So he turned on the water faucet, wet his fingers, and moistened each dog's head when he had finished with it. After the fourth puppy, he noticed that hsi talkative client had grown silent. As he sprinkled the last pup's head, the woman leaned forward and whispered... (Read more...)
